Young Woman Takes Picture Cleaning Trump's Hollywood Star - Internet Turns It Into A Joke

Since Donald Trump announced his plan to run for president, outraged Americans have gone to extreme lengths to protest his candidacy. From ‘sit-ins’ to social media threads, a huge number of Americans literally and metaphorically fought to bring down Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign. Such antics have not stopped since Mr. Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States. One particularly literal attack on the president has revolved around the repeated vandalism of Mr. Trump’s Hollywood Star, one of over 2,600 stars embedded in the streets of Hollywood Boulevard. The stars celebrate some of America’s most famous personalities, including musicians, entertainers, filmmakers and fictional characters. President Trump received his star for his contributions to the entertainment industry; specifically, for producing and starring in ‘The Apprentice’.

However, since announcing his candidacy, Mr. Trump’s star has been defaced numerous times, with anonymous individuals writing crude remarks on the star, building miniature walls around the ornament (ridiculing President Trump’s vow to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico) and, incredibly, destroying the entire star with an axe and sledgehammer. After being replaced by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the star was vandalized again, marred by insulting phrases in ‘sharpie marker’ ink.

One young woman is making headlines after she decided to show her support for President Trump, pausing to wipe away the expletives with a makeup wipe. The young woman, 20-year-old Makenna Greenwald, was in Los Angeles on vacation and decided to upload a picture of her cleaning the star to Twitter, captioning the image: “Stopped to clean @realDonaldTrump Hollywood Star. Nothing but respect for MY President. #RaisedRight”

The sincere tweet triggered an immediate response from other Americans, many of them Californians. Ms. Greenwald’s proud tweet quickly went viral, receiving over 220,000 likes and more than 56,000 retweets. However, despite the genuine gesture, the social media response to Ms. Greenwald’s idea hasn’t been wholly positive.

Unfortunately, Ms. Greenwald’s tweet has become the template for one of the year’s most popular memes. Droves of Twitter users posted similar photos of themselves cleaning different stars, mocking Ms. Greenwald’s caption by repeating it with different names. Some of the most popular memes have featured stars dedicated to Meryl Streep, Danny DeVito, Daniel Radcliffe, Pitbull, Jackie Chan, Martin Sheen and even Godzilla and Shrek.

The mocking posts weren’t restricted to physical photos of the Hollywood stars and many Twitter users were quick to attack Ms. Greenwald for her respectful attitude. One user took offense at Ms. Greenwald’s decision to upload the photo, commenting: “You had someone take the pics, then you consciously posted on twitter. I don't need to know you to know you did this for attention.” Another online commentator attacked Ms. Greenwald for her show of support for the president, writing: “hi makenna i just want to let you know that YOUR president also instituted a ban that separates families away from each other.”

However, the response to Ms. Greenwald’s tweet wasn’t completely negative. Eric Trump, one of President Trump’s sons, tweeted his thanks to Ms. Greenwald. Moreover, after appearing on ‘Fox and Friends’, Ms. Greenwald was praised by the hosts and viewers of the popular program.
