Surprise Twist - Teen Accused Of Being "Drug Kingpin" Is The Daughter Of DEA Agent

Irony takes on many different forms, but sometimes it’s a real kick in the pants. That’s certainly the case in this bizarre story, which emanates from deep in the heart of Texas. A 19-year-old Texas woman has been busted on drug trafficking charges after she was found to be in possession of all kinds of goodies. While that’s disturbing enough in and of itself, the case is made all the more curious when you consider what her own father does for a living.

As the New York Daily News shares, her father serves as a supervisory special agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency, and he has been working out of the agency’s Houston office for more than 20 years. Sarah Furay was busted after she was found to be in possession of 126 grams of high-grade marijuana, 29 "ecstasy" tablets, 31 grams of cocaine, 60 doses of an LSD-like drug, and methamphetamine. We would imagine that her father, Bill Furay, is less than pleased.

The Daily News reports that a suspicion of drug sales emanating from the woman’s apartment led to a warrant to search the premises, and that’s when her stash was discovered.

“A College Station Municipal Court judge approved a warrant to search the younger Furay’s home on Nov. 5 after an investigation into drug sales at the apartment, according to a probable cause statement released by police,” the News reports. Officers said she admitted she had cocaine and marijuana when they arrived. The cops found packaging material, two digital scales and a handwritten drug price list in the bedroom in addition to the drug cache, they said. Furay’s phone also showed “numerous texts” with her peddling coke, MDMA, acid, weed and other drugs, according to the court documents.

DEA spokeswoman Barbara Carreno offered up the following when she was asked about the unusual visual of a DEA agent’s daughter being busted for selling drugs.

“The Furay family is dealing with this private matter as best they can," she said.

Fair enough, but based on the mugshot from the daughter’s arrest, it looks like the family has its work cut out for them to make it through this rough spot. Sarah is sporting an ear-to-ear smile that has led the pic to be dubbed “one of the jolliest mugshots in recent history” and the “happiest mugshot in America” by the Houston Chronicle.

Sarah has been released on a $39,000 bond, and she’s now facing felony charges for manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance, as well as drug possession charges. We would imagine that relations are quite strained for the Furay’s right about now, but perhaps this surprising situation will serve as a gigantic wake-up call for Sarah. It certainly sounds like she was on an absolutely horrible path, and how she got there is irrelevant at this point.

It may be easy to pass judgement on her and her family, but drug addiction and abuse does not discriminate based on family circumstances. We’ll hope that she gets the help that she needs to straighten herself out, whether that’s now or while she’s serving a lengthy stay behind bars.
