Parents Welcome New Baby To World - Shocked By How Much He Weighs

Cindy Richmond, a 37-year-old woman from Lexington, South California, recently gave birth at Lexington Medical Center. Little did she know, Ms. Richmond’s newborn son, Colin Austin Keisler, broke records after weighing in at an incredible 14 pounds.

In an interview with ABC News, Ms. Richmond’s partner and the boy’s father, Arthur Keisler, proudly told reporters: “I make ‘em big,” laughing as he recalled how “The room completely changed as soon as they got him out. The doctor said, ‘Whoa, this is a big baby.'’’

Mr. Keisler also described the amazement of the hospital delivery team when the whopping baby was born, saying: “You could hear the other nurses in the room trying to guess how big he was. They said, ‘We need to weigh him right now.’ They pulled the scale into the operating room and the room erupted into like, ‘Oh, my God, this is the craziest thing ever.’”

The delivering doctor at Lexington Medical Center, Dr. Jaime Brown-Price, was certain that Colin was the heaviest baby she had ever delivered. Donna Hinton, a nurse who worked with the delivery team, added: “I have been an obstetrics nurse for 29 years and I have never seen a 14-pound baby born before.”

Colin is Ms. Richmond’s third child, and he is easily the heaviest. Her daughter, Samantha weighed 9 pounds and 8 ounces, while her eldest son, Carson, weighed 7 pounds and 6 ounces. While the difference might not seem like much, Ms. Richmond cleverly put Colin’s weight in perspective, saying: “When he came out at 14 pounds, that’s pretty much a 4 or 5-month-old toddler.”

After the record-breaking birth, Ms. Richmond was exhausted and jubilant after hearing that her son was happy and healthy. In the leadup to giving birth, doctors were concerned that Ms. Richmond might have diabetes, with Mr. Keisler recalling: “The big thing they were curious about is diabetes during pregnancy - It can lead to a baby being large like Colin, but my wife had been tested throughout the pregnancy and she did not have diabetes. Once he was born they were concerned about blood sugar but they tested him three times that day and he is perfectly fine. He’s just naturally big.”

For Ms. Richmond, the reactions of the delivery team were confusing and entertaining, telling ABC News: “We were in the surgery room and everyone was getting their phones out to Google who is the biggest baby.”

However, when the fatigued mother heard the news about Colin’s weight, she was dumbstruck, saying: “I couldn’t believe it. When I went to the doctor three weeks ago he was about 10 to 11 pounds and I’m like, ‘Oh, OK.’ So he gained about a pound a week so this makes so much sense now why I was so uncomfortable. But I wasn’t thinking it would be 14 pounds.”

After growing so much, Ms. Richmond was worried that the clothes she had bought wouldn’t fit, asking her grandparents to bring him another set for the journey home. “I was on cloud nine and went down to the gift shop and was walking around in a haze and I was like, ‘I need to find him a cute outfit he’ll fit into,’” exclaimed the exuberant mother.

Given his natal weight, doctors are predicting that Colin will grow to be a tall and strong young man. Mr. Keisler can’t wait to see if his son will be drawn to sports, animatedly telling ABC News: “A lot of people immediately think football when they learn how big he is, but I’m a big baseball fan so I’d love him to play baseball. I definitely want him to play for the Clemson [University] Tigers. We bleed orange over here. But, in all honestly, whatever he does in life is fine as long as he’s the best at it.”
