Man Punches Woman On NYC Subway In Argument Over Seat Space, Bystander Comes To Her Rescue

New York City subways can be crowded and uncomfortable, and one woman was frustrated with the strange man sitting next to her. The two shared a bench seat for two during the morning commute, but the guy was slouching and spreading his legs wide, cramming the woman into the corner. When she asked him to stop 'manspreading', he punched her in the face.

A bystander on the subway car jumped to intervene.

Sam Saia said she and the man in the seat next to her were both fighting for space and she was being pressed against the wall. She asked him to give her some more room, and he quickly became aggressive.

The 37-year-old woman couldn't believe the things the man started to say to her.

"B--ch, you ain’t nothing! I’ve raped white b--ches like you, f--king c--t!"

"You ain’t nothing, you f--ling b--ch!" the man told Saia.

He began jabbing and poking Saia, and when she turned to look at him, he closed his fist and punched her face. Her head flew back and hit the wall.

She was left in pain and with a bloody, swollen lip.

Victor Conte, a 29-year-old commuter, quickly stepped forward and grabbed the violent man. Conte held the man's arms to prevent him from attacking the woman again and tells him that he needs to get off the train at the next stop.

“Get off the train, bro! You don’t hit a lady,” Conte said firmly but calmly.

The attacker acted confused as if he didn't realize what the fuss was all about. He demanded to know why the Good Samaritan was butting into the situation between him and the woman.

"You f--king hit her in the face!" responded Conte. "She's bleeding, you piece of s--t, look at her mouth!"

The attacker agreed to get off the next stop, but noted it wasn't because of Conte. He seemed to realize he could get in trouble for what he did, and suddenly became apologetic, as if he had merely stepped on her toe.

He got off the train at the next stop, but of course, someone on the train whipped out a phone and filmed the confrontation. Police were able to identify the attacker as 56-year-old Brooklyn man, Derek Smith.

He's been taken into custody.

“This is amazing news and I’m relieved that he is unable to harm anyone else or retaliate against me,” relieved victim said to The Post. “Excellent news!”

Conte told CBS 2 News that he lives by the slogan, "See something, say something." He noticed that there was really no one to report the incident to on the enclosed subway car in motion, so he was willing to take the risk to defend the lady before the violent attacker did anything else.

Conte says he never saw a man punch a woman in the face like that before. "I had to do something," he said.

People are calling Conte a hero for coming to the woman's rescue but he says, "I was just trying to do the right thing."
