Trump Demands Travel Ban - Says He's Calling His Executive Order "What It Is"

President Trump responded to Saturday night’s deadly terrorist attacks in London by doubling down on his call for a “travel ban,” The Hill reported.

“People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN!” Trump tweeted Monday morning. He was referring to his two executive orders that would have temporarily prevented people from a half-dozen predominantly Muslim nations from entering the United States. Federal courts found that the proposed bans were unconstitutional because they targeted suspects based on their religion.

Trump wrote: “The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C. … The Justice Dept. should ask for an expedited hearing of the watered down Travel Ban before the Supreme Court & seek much tougher version! … In any event we are EXTREME VETTING people coming into the U.S. in order to help keep our country safe. The courts are slow and political!”

At least seven people died and nearly 50 suffered injuries when a van ran into a crowd on London Bridge and other attackers assaulted people with knives. Trump argued that the incidents, which came on the heels of the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, proved that actions like travel bans are necessary. “We need to be smart, vigilant and tough,” the president tweeted. “We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”

Trump’s first executive order, which he signed in January, called for rejecting visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries. The action sparked huge protests across the country. After a U.S. District Court judge and a federal appeals court blocked the order, the president inked a similar proposal listing six banned countries. Iraq was no longer on the list because the nation’s authorities had agreed to screen travelers bound for the United States, a White House official explained.

The courts also issued stays on the second order, leaving the administration no choice but to appeal the case to the Supreme Court. Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said authorities are “confident that President Trump’s executive order is well within his lawful authority to keep the nation safe and protect our communities from terrorism.” Her written statement claimed that “the president is not required to admit people from countries that sponsor or shelter terrorism, until he determines that they can be properly vetted and do not pose a security risk to the United States.”

Trump has expressed frustration with the judicial system, which is thwarting his efforts to crack down on Muslim immigration. He pledged to his supporters during last year’s presidential race that he would protect the country from radical extremists by banning Muslims. He also called for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
