Trump Admits There Are No Tapes - Comey Pays A Visit To Major News Organization

A fresh round of controversy looks to be heading in President Trump’s direction after James Comey, the ousted Director of the FBI, was spotted heading into the Times Square office of the New York Times.

During his tenure as FBI Director, Mr. Comey spearheaded an ongoing investigation into the 2016 presidential election, scrutinizing claims that Russia had disrupted the democratic process and cultivated a suspicious relationship with Mr. Trump’s campaign team. However, Mr. Comey’s directorship was cut short when he was fired by President Trump. Since the controversial announcement, President Trump and his administration have offered conflicting explanations about Mr. Comey’s dismissal, alleging that he was an inadequate leader and that he had mishandled the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

In a widely publicized and polarizing testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mr. Comey spoke about his mistrust and uneasy relationship with President Trump, citing a conversation where the president demanded his loyalty and tried to pressure him into abandoning an FBI investigation into Mike Flynn’s, the former National Security Advisor, dubious ties with Russian officials.

Since his damning testimony, Mr. Comey has been content to stay out of the public eye and watch the political ‘fireworks’ unfold. However, it appears that the former FBI Director has decided to come out of seclusion after he and his wife, Patrice Failor, were photographed walking into the lobby of the New York Times office.

This will not be the first time that Mr. Comey has chosen to speak out through external sources. Prior to testifying at the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mr. Comey disclosed a personal document to a man named Daniel Richman, a friend and Professor of Law at Columbia University. Mr. Richman subsequently released the document, a memorandum of Mr. Comey’s non-classified conversations with President Trump, to the press. President Trump has denied the version of events depicted in Mr. Comey’s memos, labelling him a liar and a ‘leaker’.

Mr. Comey’s visit to the New York Times comes only days after the president announced that he had not recorded conversations with the FBI Director, tweeting: “With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are 'tapes' or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.”

President Trump’s announcement has been a welcome clarification to online commentators and journalists, many of whom questioned the motive behind one of President Trump’s earlier tweets: “Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Despite the implicit warning, Mr. Comey remained unfazed at the prospect of audio recordings, telling the Senate Intelligence Committee: “Lordy, I hope there are tapes.”

Mr. Comey’s testimony remains a source of consternation for the Trump Administration, provoking political and social debate about whether President Trump can be accused of obstructing justice or whether there is any evidence of collusion between the Trump Administration and Russia. At this stage, it remains unclear what new revelations and accusations will be levelled at President Trump after Mr. Comey’s visit to the New York Times.
