This Is How Michael Bloomberg Sees The 2020 Presidential Election Shaking Out

There’s no telling what the political landscape is going to look like in 2020, but there’s plenty of looking ahead going on anyway. The country remains incredibly divided on a whole host of issues, and that divide even exists within the two major political parties. If we look back at the results of the 2016 election as a mandate from voters, that mandate has not been heard.

Quite simply, President Donald Trump was an against-the-grain candidate that vowed to shake things up if he was elected. Based on his clear Electoral College victory, that’s what the majority of voters want to see happen. To date, he’s been unable to move forward on the vast majority of his key agenda items. That’s partially because Democratic leadership blocks him as much as possible, but it’s also because GOP leadership can’t seem to get on the same page. In short, it’s business as usual, and that could have some serious ramifications for the next go round.

As The Hill shares, former New York City Mayor, who considered an Independent run for 2016, is among the many who have weighed in on what might go down in 2020.

“The incumbent always has an advantage,” he said during an interview with CNN. “And the Democratic Party is going to be torn apart by the left and the centralists.”

That seems to be in line with Bloomberg’s previous statements that he feels Trump has a "55 percent chance" of reelection, but he’s tempering that by pointing out that the GOP has its own issues to work through.

“Now, the Republican Party is also being torn apart between the centralists and the hard right, but they've rented a candidate,” Bloomberg continued. “The candidate has rented a party, and they will probably without much fuss get behind Donald Trump, I would assume, assuming he runs for reelection.”

We’ll have to wait and see how things play out, but early signs are pointing to another contentious presidential election cycle. Assuming the Trump presidency doesn’t implode, we can expect the Republican Party to work through their issues and come together in support of Trump. On the Democratic side, it might not be that easy.

While the vast majority of Democrats are content to bash and obstruct Trump as much as possible, there are some forward-thinking members of the Left that realize that approach may not be the best course of action. Being as anti-Trump as possible is not a platform, and there are other issues that voters are much more concerned with. If Democrats fail to put their pitchforks down and actually start working towards some solutions, the anti-Trump fatigue will grow even more.

We’ll have our first indications of that when the 2018 midterm elections roll around. If Democrats are actually able to craft a message that has nothing to do with portraying Trump as some kind of antichrist, then they could make some headway with voters that aren’t too keen on Trump’s early performance. However, if they continue on in attack mode, Trump supporters will become more emboldened, and that group may even start to grow as voters realize what the real problem is.
