Former Reagan Aide: We're Watching Trump 'Devour Himself'

President Donald Trump has never been shy about saying how he really feels. He often takes to twitter to go around the press and speak his mind directly to the American public. While in some ways, social media can be an excellent resource for the Executive Branch to communicate, but many are in shock of the kinds of comments made by Mr. Trump. Some former White House aides, both Democrats and Republicans, are urging the president to reel it in a little.

Trump recently attacked MSNBC co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough in a low-blow tweet. The Morning Joe hosts have never been particularly friendly towards President Trump, but many consider his Twitter comments out of line and unprofessional.

"I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!" Trump said in a series of tweets.

Trump made things worse by defending his tweet. He followed up a few days later with, "Crazy Joe Scarborough and dumb as a rock Mika are not bad people, but their low rated show is dominated by their NBC bosses. Too bad!"

“I think it’s been fascinating and frightening and really sad for our country,” Brzezinski responded about the tweets. “I’m very concerned as to what this once again reveals about the president of the United States. It’s strange.”

"Never imagined a day when I would think to myself, "it is beneath my dignity to respond to the President of the United States," said MSNBC employee Mark Kornblau.

Liberals who make it a general rule to hate and criticize Trump were not the only ones in an uproar over the tweets. A number of Republicans came forward to remind Trump of his office.

"Mr. President, your tweet was beneath the office and represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America," tweeted Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

"Please just stop. This isn't normal and it's beneath the dignity of your office," added Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse.

"This has to stop – we all have a job – 3 branches of gov’t and media. We don’t have to get along, but we must show respect and civility," responded Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).

Peter Wehner, who was an aide to Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, shot back at the president. "We're watching a president devour himself, his presidency & civic norms/guardrails. Is this what the right/Republican Party want to defend?"

The White House might want to hire someone to monitor check the president’s tweets before he pushes that ‘send’ button. While it’s a great way to hear his thoughts on important issues, like when he calls out reporters for perpetuating ‘fake news’, it’s quite a problem when he resorts to insults and bullying.
