CNN's Battle With The White House Reaches Boiling Point - Gingrich Suggests Banning Network

The ongoing dispute between the pro-Trump camp and the press has hit a new high after Newt Gingrich, a previous presidential candidate and former Speaker of the House, launched an extraordinary attack on CNN, confirming an unverified report that he had tried to convince President Trump to ban CNN from White House press briefings.

While appearing on ‘The Story’, Marth McCallum, Fox employee and the program’s host, asked the outspoken former politician about the rumors, saying: “You said you think that CNN, the president should cancel relations basically with CNN and exclude them from the briefing room? Really?”

In response, Mr. Gingrich stuck to his beliefs and referred to a report released by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, a sub-center of the John F. Kennedy School of Government (part of Harvard University), saying: “When Harvard reports that a network is 93 percent negative, they are not a news network. They are an attack network. These people find excuses, talking points to attack Donald Trump all day, every day.”

The report in question had found that 93% of the presidential coverage on CNN, NBC and CBS, was in the form of negative stories, anecdotes or mocking segments. Mr. Gingrich went on to further justify his recommendation by citing the actions of Emmanuel Macron, the recently elected President of France, saying: “The new president of France kicked two networks out because he said they were propaganda networks. I regard CNN as a propaganda network.”

Mr. Gingrich could not comprehend why President Trump even bothered engaging with the reporters if they were only going to find ways to attack him, angrily telling Ms. McCallum: “Explain to me why, if you look at a reporter who you know nine times out of 10 is going to be negative, why would you allow them to ask a question? What good does it possibly serve the president?”

However, despite the notorious rivalry between Fox News and CNN, Ms. McCallum refused to support Mr. Gingrich, respectfully defending the integrity of the free press, saying: “All the important questions need to be asked. And there needs to be transparency in the White House, and they need to answer questions.”

Mr. Gingrich’s highly publicized recommendation could not come at a more delicate time, given the high-strung relations between CNN reporters and the White House press secretaries. A report issued by the New York Times has claimed that President Trump is contemplating a change in the White House’s communications strategy, restricting on-camera briefings from daily to weekly and ordering reporters to pre-submit electronic copies of their questions.

In response, CNN producers are formulating a different kind of strategy. Faced with the possibility of a media blackout, CNN reporters are considering a self-imposed ban in protest of the lack of transparency in the White House. Jim Acosta, CNN’s Senior White House Correspondent, furiously declared: “This is something that the mainstream news organizations are going to be reluctant to do. We are going to have to consider banding together and saying, ‘You know what, we’re not going to cover your gaggle. We’re not going to cover your briefing, if you’re just going to have this press briefing going on in the briefing room without video or audio.'” Mr. Acosta expanded on his frustration in a flurry of tweets.
