Fitness Model Caught Cheating In Feat Of Strength

A Brazilian fitness model, Gracyanne Barbosa, has been accused of using fake weights in her Instagram workout videos. The accusations levelled against the fitness model were first issued by a rival fitness channel on YouTube, ‘Nick’s Strength and Power’.

Ms. Barbosa has over 5.2 million Instagram followers, who avidly follow the model’s fitness routines and body progress via her regular video and photo posts. The most recent controversy began after Ms. Barbosa uploaded a video of herself performing a series of squats while lifting a bar with 8 plates on it. According to Mad World News, the video shows Ms. Barbosa squatting with the bar and plates, believed to weigh a total of 500 pounds, ten times without showing much strain.

Despite her admirable fitness level, it is unlikely that Ms. Barbosa could squat this weight without assistance from her trainer or the use of a support belt. This is the argument that ‘Nick’s Strength and Power’, a YouTube channel which regularly receives over 350,000 views, used to accuse Ms. Barbosa of faking her weightlifting abilities. But the channel wasn’t making these accusations out of spite or jealousy, with the narrator emphasizing that ‘Nick’s Strength and Power’ was only discussing the Brazilian model because they thought her inaccurate videos were undermining the real achievements of professional female powerlifters.

After this video went viral, Reddit users quickly agreed, with one user pointing out that Ms. Barbosa’s plates are a different design to every other plate in the background.

This isn’t the first time that Ms. Barbosa has come under fire for her performance and progress in the gym. Ms. Barbosa has also been accused of taking anabolic steroids after individuals close to the Brazilian fitness model told local media outlets that she was taking performance-enhancing pills to get more photogenic results.

The response from online commenters has been polarizing, but the majority of social media and Reddit users agree that Ms. Barbosa’s weightlifting abilities are being inflated. “You would think that these fake weight users would at least use an amount that is even remotely realistic. Does she seriously expect us to think she's squatting 495 for reps?” wrote one commenter in the subreddit ‘Girls are using fake weights too’. Another user quickly jumped in to agree, writing: “Has no one noticed the bar isn't even bent THE SLIGHTEST?!?”

Veteran gym-goers had no doubt in their mind that Ms. Barbosa was putting on a show, with another commenter saying: “I can see my sisters who hit the gym for treadmill and 5lbs barbell stuff be sold on this, they love this type of stuff. I don't think it's meant for anyone else really, if you lift you'll see through this. In my case, it's been a while since I have but for years I regularly squatted pretty heavy for my size 3-4x a week and it didn't ever look anything this easy.”

Other Reddit users didn’t bother debating about whether the video was fake or not, and simply wondered how she managed to sneak fake plates into the gym. “I still don't understand the whole fake weights thing,” began one person. “I mean it seems like they use fake weights, but honestly how do you sneak like 10 plates into a gym? Do you have to be really friendly with the people who work at the gym?”
