Massive Wild Hog Wanders Into Hunter's Own Front Yard

Some people bring home the bacon, but if you're lucky, the bacon brings itself to your home. That's what happened to an avid Alabama hunter. He wasn't even out on a hunting trip when he managed to bag a massive wild boar. The animal wandered all by itself into his front yard. He shot the animal in self-defense, so it wouldn't hurt his children or pets, but the side benefit is a full freezer.

Wild hogs are pretty common in southern Alabama. Wade Seago, a deer hunter who runs a taxidermy business, says he's seen some big ones in the area. One day he went out into his front yard and he spotted a doozy - a hog that weighed more than 800 pounds.

The animal had wandered onto Seago's property and was just a few feet from the family's front porch. Seago knew something was wrong when he heard his dog, Cruiser, barking furiously. He went out to check what was going on and saw the great beast that Cruiser was trying to corner.

"Cruiser had this huge hog confused with all of the barking and movement," the hunter said. "It was not a good situation."

Seago says he's used to the dog barking at racoons, deer and other wild life, but this was different. He'd never seen a wild hog that big before. He ran and grabbed his .38-calibre handgun to shoot the hog.

He had to fire three shots to take the monstrous animal down. The hog had to be weighed on industrial scales at a peanut company. He couldn't believe it when it rang in at 820 pounds. The average size of a wild hog is around 200 pounds. One that reaches 300 pounds is considered large, and they’re sometimes known to get up to 600 pounds. This little piggy’s size was staggering in comparison.

There are animal lovers who hate to hear that a poor creature was shot and killed simply because it happened to wander across a human’s path, but for hunting haters, this was a different story. Seago had to shoot the hog in self-defense rather than for sport. This was not an animal he could afford to allow to run free around his property.

Wild hogs can be dangerous. They have razor-sharp tusks, they're extremely intelligent, and their behavior when they feel threatened can be aggressive. They also do millions of dollars’ worth of damage to agriculture every year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that the hogs rack up some $800,000 million in annual damages.

According to Alabama law, hunters are allowed to kill any feral hogs that wander onto their private land. Seago was well within his rights to protect his property and his family. The hog could have hurt his pets, or worse - his children.

"I didn't think twice about taking down this hog," Seago said. "I'd do it again tomorrow."

One local woman who raises pigs believes the hog was hers. She thinks it was one that escaped from a pen on her farm, but she doesn't blame Seago for killing it.

"He had every right to kill it," she said. "If a hog that size was in my front yard, I'd have done the same thing."
